Radio Frequency Identification
|
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that has been with us for some time, but is just now beginning to take off in a big way. The technology uses a tag ranging in size from a grain of rice to a brick. This tag can be programmed with a simple ID number, or detailed product information as needed. The tags are read from a distance by an RFID tag reader using an RF transceiver, and the information is recorded using a software application.
Companies like WalMart are requiring RFID tags on shipments from vendors, which allows them to scan the freight and record the contents, as well as lot numbers, expiration dates, etc. RFID is also being used for inventory control, asset management and production tracking. A commonly seen application is the readers at toll booths that record your passing and charge your account automatically. In the transportation world, RFID technology is used to automatically track vehicles and trailers entering and exiting a yard or manufacturing facility. Synergistic Systems has been involved in RFID technology from its early years, and is a reseller for many of the major vendors. |
